Testimony: A Flood, A Rooftop, And A Holy Lifeline

by The Gideons International on January 4, 2011

In recent weeks, we’ve seen much devastation in terms of floods throughout regions such as Colombia and the Philippines. While we can never fully comprehend all that God plans to accomplish during these disasters, we do know that He does care for those going through such times. Here’s a testimony of one such disaster in which a Gideon-placed Testament became a lifeline for eternal salvation.

Back in the 1990’s, a large crater broke loose on Mt. Pinatubo on the island of Luzon Philippines. A lahar (a mixture of volcanic ash and rain water) violently rushed down the mountain burying everything in its way and creating floods.

For five days, Randy, a man in his early 40’s, rode out the flood while waiting on the roof of a building for emergency relief. With little food, he was scavenging whatever he could as it floated by.

One day, he noticed something green floating in the waters. He picked it up. It was a New Testament bearing the Gideon logo.

There, stranded on the roof, Randy continued to read the New Testament each day as he awaited relief from the flood. His heart stirred and realizing his condemned state, he confessed his sins to God and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Eventually, a search and rescue team from an area church arrived and Randy shared this amazing salvation testimony with them. They prayed with him and discipled him for the next year in a nearby resettlement village.

The floods were tragic and much was lost. But God brought hope and light and saved a soul through a little green Gideon New Testament that floated by the right person at the right time.
