Millions of people languish in jails and prisons around the world, some of them in very harsh conditions. No matter what they have done, they are not beyond hope. Scripture distributions to prisons and jails may be the only way these individuals can learn that God loves them and that they can be forgiven. Here are just two of the many testimonies we have received from prisoners about the impact of our ministry on their lives.
I was detained under Section 29 of the Internal Security Act in one of South Africa’s jails during the latter half of 1986. I will never forget my only companion in solitary confinement: that little Testament was my only friend and turned out to be the best book I had ever read.
I had heard the Word of God as a child and as a teenager, but I had never understood or experienced the feeling I felt as I read that Testament with Psalms and Proverbs. In my loneliness in solitary confinement, I felt the full presence of God.
From that time in prison, I became a born-again believer in Jesus Christ. God’s Word became my foundation for all I do. Now I am a teacher. May God bless those who spread His Word.
I was an armed robber and condemned to death by firing squad. After the death sentence, I was taken to prison in Jos. It was there that I was given the New Testament by The Gideons. By reading this Testament, I received Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior.
Thank you, Gideons, for your efforts in helping bad people like me change from our wicked ways to Christ. I was condemned to death, but the Lord Jesus Christ, who dies for my sins, has set my soul free. To tell you the truth, I was an armed robber before, but not anymore. Now I am a child of God.
